Pittsburgh Pirates added five pitchers and one position player in rounds 5-20 of the 2026 MLB Draft, continuing their focus on pitching depth as they ride a three-game winning streak with a 50-47 record in the National League. The team’s Day Two haul included two right-handers, two left-handers, and a third baseman, all chosen to strengthen their minor league pipeline.
Pittsburgh Pirates opened Day Two with left-hander Ryan Marohn from North Carolina State at pick 140. The 21-year-old posted a 3.18 ERA in eight starts this season, striking out 62 batters in 45.1 innings despite minor injury setbacks. His changeup is his standout pitch, and he was previously drafted by the Guardians in 2023.
They followed with Alabama right-hander Tyler Fay at pick 169. Fay, 22, threw a no-hitter against Florida this season and logged 127 strikeouts in 109 innings over 18 starts. His slider is his most effective offering, and he brings durability to a staff that needs depth.
Next came Bryson Moore from Florida State at pick 198. The 21-year-old transferred from Virginia and went 6-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 starts. He earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors in April and was named to the Southeast All-Region Second Team.
Pittsburgh Pirates selected Alex Overbay, the son of former Pirates first baseman Lyle Overbay, at pick 228. The 21-year-old right-hander transferred from UNLV and made 20 appearances for Arizona State, recording seven saves. He struck out 50 batters in 42 innings, showing promise as both a starter and reliever.
The Pirates broke their pitcher streak with Tre Phelps, a third baseman from Georgia, selected at pick 258. Ranked 121st by MLB Pipeline, Phelps brings power and defensive versatility. He’s the first non-pitcher taken by Pittsburgh on Day Two and could develop into a future middle-of-the-order bat.
All five players will begin their pro careers in the Pirates’ rookie or short-season affiliate systems. The team’s front office emphasized velocity and command in this draft class, targeting pitchers who can handle high-leverage roles down the line. With the Pirates sitting at 50-47 and on a W3 streak after a 14-5 win over Milwaukee on July 12, the focus remains on building for the future while competing now.
